It's Hard to Have Fun

It's hard to have fun when your love's gone away

This song/poem is based upon a true story told to me./Al

It's hard to have fun when your love's gone away
It's hard to have fun when you're crying each day
How can you have fun when the last thing she'd say
"I'm sorry to leave you, but have fun anyway."

I remember the day we met at the beach
She was so lovely but just out of reach
I stumbled and spoke as if in a dream
"It's hot out, I'm hungry. How about an ice cream?"

This was in Brazil, on the beachfront in Rio
She's with a girlfriend, that made a trio
But after the ice cream we managed a walk
And found much in common as we started to talk.

I met her sis and I met her brother
Then I met her dad and I met her mother
We were married in Rio, and happily wed
And finished the nuptials resting in bed.

It was a good marriage, our love lasted long
Until she was sickened, I heard her swan song
"Please when I go, please promise that day
You'll go see my parents and say what I say."

Our life together will set with the sun
"But promise me your life will be one of fun
That you'll take joy in your hobbies, take pride in your friends
And never feel that you need to make amends."

So now I'm all alone trying to have fun
It's the hardest thing that I've ever done
I feel so bad when I'm feeling good
I walk along the river no knowing what I should.

~ Al Zagofsky
