Draft National Coverage Determination (NCD) for Dementia and Neurodegenerative Diseases

Descriptive Information

One of the Goals of CMS is to account for cultural diversity in medical care delivery. The MMSE test may not be culturally sensitive. Accordingly, CMS proposed the following "Doo-wop Era" test to measure cognitive impairment in the baby boomer generation in a culturally sensitive manner.

Indications and Limitations of Coverage

A. General
Medicare covers diagnostic tests to differentiate frontotemporal dementia (FTD) and Alzheimer’s disease (AD) from “The 60’s generalized cognitive disorder”. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has tentatively approved the “Doo-wop Era Test to Evaluate Cognition” (DETEC) for use in the differential diagnosis of dementing neurodegenerative diseases.

Level 4: Severe impairment: 5-10 correct answers: regular use of "mind altering" substances.

Level 5: Extreme impairment: 0- 4 correct answers.
